2013 RACE IN MEMORY OF:
CHRISTOPHER "BUBBA" WALKER
Be a Champion,
Help a Champion!
Sallarulo’s Race for Champions and Carnival to benefit Special Olympics Florida - Broward County was held on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Nova Southeastern University Davie campus.
The 8th Annual Sallarulo’s Race for Champions, USATF certified race, had over 680 runners and walkers alike complete a 5k course around NSU’s scenic campus and enjoy post-event refreshments and entertainment at the Carnival of Champions honoring our very own Special Olympics Athletes.
All proceeds from the race will provide needed funds for Special Olympics Florida - Broward County mission of providing year-round sports trainings and athletic competitions in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. The race is our largest community event of the year.
“Sallarulo’s Race for Champions was founded on the belief that everyone deserves a chance, an opportunity to live a fulfilled life. The race not only raises funds for Special Olympics but raises awareness by promoting inclusion and acceptance. Over 1200 community members, with and without disabilities, participated as equals and then celebrated their accomplishments at the Carnival of Champions. Special guests included: Snoopy (Metlife), Bernie (Miami Heat), Stanley (Florida Panthers), Miami Heat Dancers, Razor (NSU) and the Native Villiage.
The event is made possible because of the generosity of many sponsors, some of which include: Pinion, Inc., Publix, Broward Health, Lawlor/Zigler , Met Life, Nova Southeastern University , A.J. Nassar & Michelle Pesonen, Fiora Financial Group, Healthcare Performance Anesco , Hungry Howies , I. In Broward County alone, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates there are between 44,162 and 52,994 residents with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics strives to reach as many of these individuals and their families as possible. Through sports training and competition, athletes develop physically, socially and psychologically. We currently serve over 1800 athletes. This event gives Special Olympics the ability to create a better world by fostering the acceptance and inclusion of all people through the power of sports.
